Slice from Multiple Layers Photoshop Action

Posted on May 06, 2013

I love Photoshop actions and I use quite a few on a daily basis.

I’ve been using the awesome Bjango actions for most of my tasks but I noticed something was missing. There is no action to cut a single slice from multiple layers. For example, if you have a complex icon composed of multiple layers that overlap and you need to export all the shapes into one asset. I happen to do this a lot so I created my own action to automate the process.

Slice from Multiple Layers Action Example

The action performs a simple set of tasks. It first duplicates and merges a selection of layers. The action then creates a slice from the resulting layer and deletes the latter to keep things clean.

With the action you just need to select all the layers the slice should cover and run it.

Go ahead check it out and tell me what you think.

Downloading the action

You can download the action here or visit the Github repository.

Once you download and unzip the file double click the Make slice from multiple layers.atn file and this will install it in Photoshop.

Select all the layers from which you wish to create a slice and then run the action. You may run the action from the Photoshop Actions Panel (Window>Actions) or by using the cmd+shift+F2 shortcut.
